dream outfit for today. it’s cold and gloomy outside, although thankfully it feels more like a gloomy spring day in massachusetts than a gloomy winter one. all i want to do is stay in bed all day, drink tea and be extra cozy. but alas, i have class from 9:30-3:45 and work from 4:30-11 pm. so it’s gonna be a long day.

i’m done with my major and my minor
all my classes are ones that i chose because i wanted to take them - none of them were required
i’m working 1/3 of the hours that i was working last semester, which is going to give me less money but also a lot more sanity and free time
i’m going to be writing a lot more for the daily collegian at umass so i can build up my portfolio again
i’m getting back into photojournalism
i actually have time to see my friends and have lunch and dinner on campus
my readings are interesting!
and now, after a long day of class, doing a photo assignment, buying books all over town, going to the news meeting for the daily collegian, and homework, i’m going to curl up and watch the new episode of downton abbey and sleep.

Christina Degiovanni, a Humboldt State University student, was arrested Thursday after drug task force agents confiscated two pounds of processed marijuana, two rifles, a handgun and $49,000 in cash from her boyfriend’s Arcata home where Degiovanni had been staying, according to a release.
The Humboldt County Drug Task Force responded to the Arcata home after learning from Reno police that Degiovanni’s boyfriend Scott Porter, 35, was involved in possible narcotics courier activity on a passenger rail train in Reno. Reno officers seized approximately $73,000 from Porter’s luggage during a narcotics courier sting. Porter was released at the scene but faces possible charges in the future.
Upon learning about the sting, Arcata task force agents responded to Porter’s Arcata home where they made contact with Degiovanni. According to the release, agents were able to smell the odor of marijuana coming from the house and secured a search warrant for the residence.
Degiovanni was arrested on suspicion of possession of marijuana for sale and being armed during the commission of a felony. Degiovanni has been booked into the Humboldt County jail.
so i have to read the book the success principles for my career seminar for the journalism dept. and basically it’s a motivational/self-help book about how to have a successful career/be a successful person.
except it’s seriously fucked up. it’s basically a how-to guide to be successful if you are a white, rich, male. the first principle he discusses in the book is to take responsibility for your life. makes sense in theory, but all his examples are incredibly fucked. he basically says you can’t blame anything on racism, you can’t blame your gender on why you didn’t get a job or why you can’t make as much money as men.
oh and he indulges in some ridiculously victim-blaming language and even uses this wonderful example:
You didn’t demand he join you in counseling or leave the first time he hit you, so now you’re still getting hit.
victim-blaming much? he should probably be made aware of the fact that not everyone can just up and leave an abusive relationship even if they want to. sometimes it’s because they have nowhere else to go, no money or their lives are threatened. it’s fucked up, but it’s not the person’s fault that they’re in that situation and can’t easily get out.
i totally didn’t plan it this way but all day tomorrow i have history and food classes.
